On December 9, we commemorate International Anti-Corruption Day – UNODC, a pivotal occasion to reflect on the importance of combating corruption and strengthening legality and transparency within judicial systems and across all sectors of society.
This day was established by the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) to honour global efforts to eradicate corruption and promote a culture of integrity. It serves as a reminder to governments, institutions, and citizens of the necessity to join forces in creating a fairer, more transparent, and equitable environment.
This year, the event organised by the American Embassy and UNODC in Ecuador, under the theme “Towards a Culture of Legality, Integrity, and Transparency,” provides an opportunity for experts, authorities, and leaders in the fight against corruption to share knowledge, experiences, and solutions. The event will feature presentations, conferences, and roundtable discussions addressing best practices to combat corruption, strengthen institutions, and foster transparent justice.
Mary Mar Samaniego Alcívar, attorney and Head of the Operations and Illicit Trade Department at Meythaler & Zambrano Abogados, will be one of the distinguished participants at this event.
Mary Mar, winner of the National Contest for the Culture of Legality and Prevention of Corruption, will present her essay titled “Judicial Compliance: A Path to Eradicating Corruption and Restoring Confidence in the Judicial System”. In this essay, she proposes innovative strategies to incorporate judicial compliance as an effective tool in the fight against corruption.
Her essay emphasises the urgent need to integrate compliance systems within judicial structures to ensure that judicial decisions are fair, transparent, and accountable. During her presentation, Mary Mar will highlight how judicial compliance can enhance public trust in the justice system, fostering greater transparency and accountability.
This event is an excellent opportunity for legal professionals, compliance experts, and all those committed to justice and transparency to reflect on the progress made and the actions we can still take to advance in the fight against corruption.
