BIOGRAPHY

Bettina Mena is a lawyer specializing in intellectual property law. She has extensive experience in trademarks, patents, industrial designs, enforcement, and the regulation of intangible assets.

She served as Director General of the National Service of Intellectual Rights (SENADI), Ecuador’s national intellectual property authority, where she led the application and administration of the national and Andean intellectual property regime. During her tenure, she provided institutional leadership to the country’s intellectual property system, with direct involvement in high-complexity administrative matters, the development of institutional criteria, and the strengthening of public policies for the protection of intellectual property rights.

Following her public-sector experience, she joined private practice, where she provides strategic advice on complex administrative proceedings, regulatory disputes, and border measures, as well as on the design of advanced strategies for the protection of intangible assets, particularly in highly regulated sectors.

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Led the implementation of Ecuador’s first Specialized Intellectual Property Mediation Center and strengthened enforcement mechanisms, including coordination with the National Customs Service (SENAE) to protect intellectual property rights in foreign trade.

  • Represented Ecuador in the negotiations of the Riyadh Treaty on Industrial Designs, participating in technical discussions on the international harmonization of industrial design protection.
